Hi,
GeoDa can represent all kind of maps -with or without islands- only if they
are ESRI shape files. I suppose that you are referring to the construction
of contiguity weight files. In this case, I recommend you the following steps.
1. First I'd decide which other zip codes should be more related to the
islands ones: for example, in Spain, which is my case, I usually connect
the Balearics -an individual province- with other provinces which are
simmilar in terms of culture and/or economy, as they are the Catalonian and
Valencian ones; in the case of the Canary Islands, as they constitute two
Spanish provinces, they are usually interconnected each other.
2. Once you've decided what to do, you should build a GAL file with the
help of GeoDa command.
3. And afterwards, you can open this GAL file with a text processor
-Notepad or Ms. Word- to edit the corresponding island rows so as they can
be connected with the zip codes you'd decided. If you store this GAL file
with the text processor you can use it as usual.
I expect this helps. Best regards,
Coro.
