Dear All,
Thank you for your helpful comments and suggestions. I had tried each of
those before and nothing seemed to help, but I think I have a handle on the
problem, and have successfully loaded the files I wanted. I think I have
narrowed the problem to two possibilities:

1. The first four fields (FID,shape, area, perimeter) in ArcView shapefiles
must be present, and in their order. These fields are created by ArcView.
2. Duplicate field names cause problems

I had created the "problem" shapefiles in ArcView or ArcMap from a series of
joins, and had edited columns, deleted some, etc. In the process I think I
either had a couple of duplicate field names or had deleted one of the
"essential" fields (see ! Above).

When I corrected these conditions, my files read in, so the problem must lie
somewhere in these possibilities.
