[Openspace] Shapefile mystery

I am a relatively new user to Geoda, having been introduced to it in a
course by Dr. Anselin.  When I go to open a shape file, some files I try to
open will cause the program to freeze, while others open just fine.  These
are all polygon ESRI shape files, so I'm not sure why the program is having
a problem with them.  And I can't figure out what's different about the
files that are successfully opened and those that aren't.  Any clues?
