Talen Recognized for JPER Article
Professor Emily Talen earned this year's Chester Rapkin Award, which recognizes the best article to appear each year in the the Journal of Planning Education and Research (JPER).
The award-winning article, "New Urbanism, Social Equity, and the Challenge of Post-Katrina Rebuilding in Mississippi," discusses rebuilding plans for eleven towns along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The article examines the rhetoric and reality of the social equity goals of the plans.
In its report to the JPER editors, the award committee observed that the article "incorporates a mix of theory and ideas, excellent supportive illustrations and data, to clearly describe the dynamics between the state, CDCs, and the New Urbanist design experts." They also commented that the article makes "a compelling case for why New Urbanists must go beyond physical representations of social equity in city design to become vocal advocates and enablers."
